Yeah, don’t get your hopes up like I did when I saw Josh wanted coverage of this story. The WB, that bastion of teen dramas, is closing its doors this September as it merges with UPN, that bastion of urban desolation, to form the CW. As a farewell to its legions of fans who once pined for a pre-TomKat Katie Holmes (including yours truly; we all know what the true gift in The Gift was), WB is re-broadcasting the pilots of several of its signature shows including ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’.

According to MovieHole the network will also show the premieres of ‘Felicty’ (pre-Mission Impossible III Keri Russell) and ‘Dawson’s Creek’ (a show whose female leads went on to bigger, though not necessarily better, things). ‘Buffy’ began in the spring season of 1997 and is still considered by many to be Joss Whedon’s opus, ‘Firefly’ not withstanding. These shows came at a time when television had not yet been perverted by people whoring themselves on camera and calling it “reality tv”. Scripted shows like these are a rare breed these days; even ‘The OC’ is being scaled back by Fox. ‘Buffy’ found an audience that loved a good story, and even in its schlockyness ‘Dawson’s Creek’ managed to be entertaining.

The CW carries over with it shows like ‘Veronica Mars’ and ‘Gilmore Girls’, and while many think ‘Veronica Mars’ is the best thing to ever come out of UPN, I don’t think there is another show on TV that resonated with fans the way ‘Buffy’ did. And yes, I do get to make up words here at CB like “schlocky”. And "bombastifying". Put that in your spell check and edit it.
