The Clicker Goes To Confession

If my Catholic upbringing has taught me anything, it’s that confession is good for the soul. Granted, the admissions I have with regards to TV are hardly mortal sins but still, these aren’t the type of things I regularly share with the general public. Perhaps its more the feeling of guilt that weighs me down (another side-effect of Catholicism) that has inspired me to share a few personal TV related secrets that I’ve harbored for quite a while.

I never liked ‘The Sopranos.’

I should say this off the bat: I missed the first season and many have said that the first was the best season so there’s a good chance that might have had a major affect on my opinion of the show. I just don’t get why people got so wrapped up in the story. I loved Goodfellas and The Departed so I know its not the content of the story that turned me off. I guess I just didn’t find the series as gripping as most people did. Every once in a while something cool would happen but other than that it was just a standard drama series. I wouldn’t say it was a bad show – just that I always found it to be a bit overrated.

While we’re on the subject – other hugely popular shows I don’t care about include:

‘Survivor,’ ‘The Bachelor,’ ‘CSI,’ and ‘Dancing With The Stars

I cry sometimes during ‘So You Think You Can Dance

I don’t know what it is. I’ve never been all that big into dancing and this is the first season of the show that I’m actually watching every week. For some reason though, I find some of the dances so emotionally moving that I actually tear up. Generally when this happens, I make my best effort not to let my husband see me. If he does catch me blinking too much or wiping my eyes, I’ll get the standard “Are you crying?!” response which is usually followed with a laugh and an eye roll.

Each summer, I almost always develop an unhealthy obsession with ‘Big Brother

I’m not just talking about making sure I watch all three episodes per week. I also get the feeds and when I’m not able to watch them, I check Jokers Updates regularly to see what’s going on in the house. They have great live updates at that site.

‘Big Brother’ fever doesn’t usually hit me until about mid-July when the houseguests start to get down and dirty with their strategies. That’s when I get hooked. If this season is like the last few seasons, the only thing that’s going to get me away from the feeds this summer will be the “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” release but that’s a whole other obsession that has nothing to do with TV so let’s not even get into that one now.

Every once in a while I find ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’ disappointing and a bit annoying

Am I alone in this? For me, the two things that make the show worth watching are the customizations of homes and the back-stories of the families. Most of the families have some super-touching story about heroic acts, battles with rare diseases or some tragic accident that has crippled their finances. These are the kinds of people you really want to see getting a gorgeous new home filled with Kenmore appliances and quirky themed rooms.

Once in a while though, I’ll see an episode where the family is just a run-of-the-mill down on their luck group of people and for some reason, I just can't get into it. Maybe its because I see so many people like that at my day job. Sure, its nice that they got a new home but for whatever the reason, I just don’t care as much as I normally do. I also need to see a really good reaction from the family when they see the house. If someone doesn’t collapse to the ground crying because they’re so overjoyed that their life has finally been changed for the better, I really can't get excited for them.

So there you go. Sure, they’re not really major confessions – more like opinions that deviate from the majority but I still feel better for having gotten them out there.

If you’ve got TV confessions of your own, feel free to comment below. I wont judge you for it.
