Could Joss Whedon's Next Series Go To FX?

Want to know how crazy fanatical Whedon fans are, or at least how crazy the media thinks they are? FX president John Landgraf reported that he had a lunch scheduled with Joss Whedon within the next few weeks, as reported on Sci Fi Wire, and the news is spreading like wildfire. That's right. News about lunch.

Granted, this is Joss Whedon, who's had two series in a row fail at FOX (Firefly and Dollhouse), after finding success on The WB and UPN with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. The difference is that those latter two are netlets, which means lower ratings expectations. I think Whedon creates these brilliant niche shows that are almost too good and clever for mainstream audiences. Thus, he can't succeed on FOX.

But on FX, he could do very, very well. Now, it's too late for Dollhouse, and I think he's doing a fine job of wrapping up that storyline anyway, so if they are talking about getting in bed together -- so to speak -- it would likely be a new project. I think Whedon could be very happy on FX. For one thing, the network would more than likely leave him the hell alone to make his show however he damn well pleases, something FOX couldn't seem to do with either show.

If he can just stick to what he does best, which is creating quirky ensemble casts in fantastical settings, then it'll be magic all over again. Or maybe they'll just order the cheesecake and argue over who's going to get the check. What a scoop!
