Fox Benches Breaking In For May Sweeps

Another series struggling in the ratings has been benched by Fox. This time it’s the comedy Breaking In, which has been failing to deliver the ratings in its second season, and has been officially shelved for the remainder of the season. Facing May sweeps, Fox apparently decided Breaking In simply wasn’t going to break out of its ratings rut.

TVLine says that Fox plans to air the remaining episodes at a later date. It could, however, go the way of I Hate My Teenage Daughter, another Fox Tuesday night comedy that was first shelved temporarily, and then pulled from the lineup entirely. While Daughter hasn’t been officially cancelled, the stars have already been seeking new gigs, and the cancellation seems likely at this point.

As for Breaking In, it has been struggling since it returned for Season 2 late in 2011, and was left out of the recent list of renewals at Fox which included New Girl, Raising Hope and Glee. Breaking In was part of the Tuesday night comedy block along with all three of these series, but going forward Fox will be airing re-runs of New Girl instead. It’s not a good sign when reruns of a freshman series take your time slot over new episodes. I won’t be surprised if we soon get a cancellation notice on Breaking In, nor would it surprise me if the plan to air the last few episodes is shelved as well. Breaking In will be replaced by New Girl re-runs as of April 24th.
