With Jimmy Kimmel back on board at ABC for another two years, insiders have been discussing the possibility of a timeslot move. Rumors first circulated that Kimmel had asked to move up five minutes to midnight during his contract negotiations; later, many speculated that the network itself was pushing to un-TBS itself. Regardless of who wanted it, it’s happening, and Nightline is the victim.

According to Deadline, as of February 4th, Jimmy Kimmel Live will move to the coveted 12 AM slot, while Nightline will keep its ordinary 11:35 start time and end five minutes earlier. On the surface, this may seem like a big slap in the face to the news program, but as part of the agreement, ABC has agreed to air at least thirteen hours of new Nightline content in primetime. That’s arguably an overall plus, and in all seriousness, as the only non entertainment show on ABC, NBC or CBS airing that late, they should be pleased ABC is protecting their timeslot.

The big news this week in the world of late night was Howard Stern bashing Jay Leno repeatedly, but when asked who the radio host admired, Stern brought up Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel. That’s high praise, though more than earned. Jimmy Kimmel has steadily improved since debuting more than a half decade ago, and in doing so, has turned himself into a viable late night contender.
