Randy Jackson Sells A New Singing Competition Series To MTV

For those of you who were sitting around thinking how there just aren’t enough singing competition shows these days, there’s good news. And for those of you who were thinking there are entirely too many, well, too bad. Randy Jackson has sold a singing show to MTV, which is currently in the early stages of development.

The show has no title at the moment, according to Deadline, and will feature sibling singing groups competing with each other. Think The Jackson Five, The Beach Boys, or more recently, the Jonas Brothers. So it’s a little different from some of the many other singing competitions series out there, But it’s still yet another singing show in a market that one would think is pretty much packed at this point. Between Idol, where Jackson has been a judge since the beginning, The Sing-Off, and more recent entrants such as Duets, The X Factor and The Voice, there’s more than enough shows to keep fans of this type of show busy and their DVRs full.

Randy Jackson is a pretty big name however, and MTV is clearly hoping that, along with the difference in the format, might earn this one a piece of the singing competition viewership pie. Right now they’re looking around for possible contestants for the series, who will compete for an unknown prize. Jackson also executive producer on American’s Best Dance Crew for MTV, so he’s got a strong relationship there. Currently no-one, including Jackson, has a contract for Idol beyond the 11th season, but there’s no reason to think he might move on at the moment.
