Smash To Add Three New Series Regulars For Season 2

Things are going to be changing on Season 2 of Smash. Not only does the show have a new showrunner in Gossip Girl’s Josh Safran, but word is they are looking to add three new cast regulars to join the show. The three are meant to be part of the cast of the Broadway musical Bombshell that the series is centered around.

Now that Smash has crowned its Marilyn Monroe for the musical within the show, Katharine McPhee, there’s more casting to be done. TVLine says the show is in the process of casting for a total of three new regular roles to join the lineup of the Bombshell cast. With Josh Safran now on board as showrunner following the unexpected exit of Theresa Rebeck, there’s plenty of speculation as to what change the series will see for next season. It seems doubtful that the addition of new regulars will be the end of the changes.

Smash is seeking to cast these three roles: Courtney, an African-American chorus girl in her mid-to-late 20s with a killer set of pipes and an open-minded outlook, Danny, a working-class mid-20s Brooklyn boy with a bit of an attitude and a rock/soul singing voice, and Joe, a cheery and friendly gay man in his early-to-mid 20s. While TVLine's wish-list casting has all of these roles being filled by Idol alums in the thread of McPhee’s casting, I think we might see some surprises in the casting; either some unknowns or known actors whose singing talents come as a surprise. It looks to me like Smash intends to shake things up and keep viewers on their toes in the upcoming season, so unpredictable casting choices would fit right into that theme.
