Steel Magnolias Remake Starring Queen Latifah To Air On Lifetime In October

Lifetime has announced the date for the world premiere of the Lifetime Original Movie Event Steel Magnolias, the TV adaptation of the play and film by the same name. This new take on the emotional story will have Queen Latifah, Phylicia Rashad, Adepero Oduye, Condola Rashad, Jill Scott and Alfre Woodard among the lead roles.

Executive produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, Lifetime's take on Steel Magnolias is described as "an updated contemporary version of the beloved stage play and 1989 film, Steel Magnolias." The story follows a group of women who support each other in good times and bad, facing various personal challenges and sharing laughs while convening at a beauty parlor. Lifetime debuted the trailer earlier this summer, but at that time, we didn't know when the film would premiere on the cable channel. It looks like we'll only have to wait a little more than a month to see this new take on the story. Lifetime announced today that Steel Magnolias will debut on Sunday, October 7th at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

I've never seen the stage play, but I'm very familiar with the film, and as a fan of the story, I'll be interested to see this new version. And I'm especially interested to see how Queen Latifah handles the role of M'Lynn, the part previously played by Sally Field in the 1989 film. Alfre Woodard as Ouiser also sounds like a great bit of casting, though it's hard to top Shirley MacLaine.
