TV Recap: Big Brother 10 - Week 9 Nominations

I don’t think it needs to be said that right now in the Big Brother house, Dan and Memphis are in total control. Sure, things could definitely change in that whole expect-the-unexpected way that things tend to go down on Big Brother but as of tonight, it’s all about the Renegades.

So Renny is gone and Keesha is sad. Not only is her friend out of the house but so is her closest ally. Sure, we’ve all heard the overused “I’m alone in this game.” phrase but in Keesha’s case, she kind of is right now. Jerry’s also all alone but I’m less sympathetic towards him since he seems to pick and choose who his BFF is and who he dislikes on a week to week basis.

After the houseguests returned into the house during last week’s live show, they found a Sumo wrestler sitting in their living room. The houseguests were visibly freaked out by the guy’s presence. Not only was there a huge almost-naked man sitting in their house but as Memphis pointed out, they’ve only seen houseguests in the house since they got there so it was kind of weird to find a total stranger hanging out, occasionally speaking in a foreign tongue.

Dan caught a glimpse of the envelope the man was sitting on and positioned himself near the guy so that he could grab it the next time the guy stood up. When the time was right, he snatched up the envelope and read the contents, which told the houseguests that there was a luxury competition coming up and that the winner would win a trip that could impact the game. That’s all the information they got. Little did they know that one of the evicted houseguests would be coming in to the house to help keep the competition moving.

Jessie showed up in the house wearing a gorilla costume and proceeded to wake the houseguests up by jumping around and banging on the HoH room door. Everyone went outside to find a contortionist and various random props like a big ear with a sideburn, a bathtub filled with something brown that looked like peanut butter, a fake elephant, a giant hot dog, a big blueberry and an egg with the word “it” on it. The houseguests had to figure out which clues were relevant and what commonly used phrase they hinted at. Each houseguest could guess three times and they had three hours to make their guesses.

As the houseguests sat around the backyard looking at the different clues, gorilla-Jessie wandered around making silly poses that amused everyone. Jerry and Keesha made a couple of their guesses early, with Jerry guessing “Hear no evil” in response to the ear and “Dogs are a man’s best friend” in response to the dog. Keesha guessed “Where sleeping dogs lie” and “Don’t count your chickens before your eggs are hatched.” Dan was holding back on guessing and Memphis had no clue what any of the clues could mean. Gorilla-Jessie started covering up some of the clues with tarps, which the houseguests quickly deduced meant that those clues weren’t relevant to the phrase. Jerry was bummed as he made all of his guesses prior to the clues being covered up.

Keesha guessed “Blew it.” in reference to the blueberry and the word “it” on the egg. She knew she blew it but it was worth a shot. The only thing Memphis could come up with was “Fruitless Exit” which is definitely this season’s “Spool of Lies” (Howie’s ridiculous fake-answer to a similar competition a few seasons ago) and it was Dan who got the winning phrase: Bury the Hatchet.

The phrase was definitely relevant to the prize. Dan was told in the diary room that he was going to a private beach and he could either bring a current houseguest or one of the evicted houseguests in the jury house. Dan naturally decided to try and win a vote on the Jury and chose Michelle. He mentioned that with Libra taking Michelle’s trip to Hawaii, she might be appreciative of a trip to a beach with Dan. I’m not so sure about that since Michelle did say she wanted to do physical harm to Dan but who knows? Dan’s a good talker and if anyone can spin this prize to benefit their game, he can. Plus part of me thinks Michelle is egotistical enough to fall for Dan’s generosity if he makes her think the trip is all about her.

Dan smartly told Memphis, Jerry and Keesha that he had the opportunity to bring one of them but opted not to since he didn’t want to cause tension. He omitted the part about bringing a jury member. They don’t need to know that, though Jerry did speculate over whether Dan might be spending time on the beach with the jury. Little does Jerry know that this is a very close guess. A lot closer than the guesses he made in the competition, that’s for sure. We should find out on Tuesday whether or not Dan’s trip with Michelle went well or if it was just an awkward day at the beach (with Michelle beating the Bible out of Dan for good measure). Dan also expressed some concern over how the next two evicted houseguests might react when they learn that the reason he didn’t take them to the beach was because he was going with a jury member.

Dan and Memphis discussed nominations. Now it should be said that this week’s nominations are irrelevant. The only person guaranteed safety is Dan. It will all come down to the Veto. Whoever wins that, (providing it’s not Dan) will have the sole vote in this week’s eviction. Whoever doesn’t win it (aside from Dan) will be on the block. If Dan does win it, he can change the nominations at the Veto ceremony. So it really doesn’t matter who Dan nominates right now. Since Memphis exposed a bit of his loyalty towards Dan last week when he used the Veto to save Dan, the two speculated over the nominations this week and how they might be able to repair that.

Earlier in the episode, Memphis said he hoped Dan wouldn’t nominate him but during this conversation he changed his tune. The two realized that if Dan put Keesha and Jerry on the block, it would only reinforce their suspicion that Dan and Memphis were in a final-two deal. Since they have to worry about Jerry winning the Veto and thus, being the deciding vote over who would go home this week, it didn’t seem like such a bad idea for Dan to put Memphis up and keep Keesha “safe.” So that’s what Dan did. During the nomination ceremony, Dan pulled Keesha’s key out of the box and that was it. Jerry and Memphis were nominated.

Neither Jerry nor Keesha seemed to see through Dan’s nomination plan. Jerry fed right into it, telling the diary room that since Dan put Memphis up on the block, it must mean Dan’s not with Memphis. Keesha also felt reassured that Dan kept her safe because he feels like he’s closer to her than Memphis. Dan and Memphis’ plan worked like a charm. If Jerry thinks Memphis is angry at Dan, that gives him all the more incentive to keep Memphis around if Jerry wins the Veto, believing Memphis would choose to take Jerry to the end rather than Dan if he wins the final HoH.

We’ll find out who won the Veto and whether it’s used on Tuesday.
