TV Recap: Heroes - Chapter 13 - The Fix

It seems like many of our favorite ‘Heroes’ are feeling pretty defective lately. Tonight’s episode, titled “The Fix” centered on most of the characters trying to get their lives together. If you compared the first half of the season as one giant super-power party, these recent episodes are sort of like the morning after. The fun of having powers has worn off and now the characters are desperately trying to clean up the messes they’ve made (or in Peter’s case, prevent the mess he’s convinced he’s going to make of New York City).

Matt faces the police department and they question him about his report, which accuses HRG of keeping a dangerous super-powered serial killer hidden in his paper factory. After reading his bosses’ minds, he determines that lying and retracting his statement is the best way to go. He tells them he made it all up because he was frustrated at failing the detectives test multiple times and wanted to look like a hero. They determine that he’s crazy and suspend him for six months. The up-side to this is that he can spend more time with his wife, who is the only person who believes in his abilities. The two work out a deal where in Matt wont invade her mind. She lets him read it one more time though and its then that he learns she’s pregnant. Aww.

Claire is miserable because her whole life is one big lie and what’s worse, she has to keep the lie up lest her surrogate father realize she still has her memory of the events that took place last fall. She contacts the Haitian by putting a wind chime in her window. They meet and she asks about her parents. The Haitian says he has no knowledge of her father but that her mother died in a fire in Kermit, TX. Claire and Zach work on researching what happened to her mother. When Mr. Bennett sees Zach in the house, Claire lies and says they’re biology partners working on a science project about manatees. This seems to work at first but when her dad went to her room to bring her a book on manatees, he noticed the chimes in the window. He didn’t say anything about them but they definitely caught his attention.

Claire and Zach find a story about a woman who was supposedly killed, along with her 18-month-old daughter, in a fire 14 years earlier in Kermit, TX. She calls everyone with the last name of Gordon to see if she can find one of her mother’s relatives. We see her make a call to a blonde woman. Claire asks if she’s related to Meredith Gordon and explains that her mother died in a fire and she thinks she’s the daughter who supposedly died as well. The woman tells Claire that she’s Meredith, though it appears to go by a different name and then proceeds to light her cigarette with her fingers.

Hiro and Ando get ready to continue the search for the sword but get kidnapped by some guys in a black van. They actually only caught Ando but Hiro wouldn’t leave his friend behind and ran back to surrender himself if they let Ando go. They take Hiro and keep Ando in the van. There’s a man in the van who tells them that his boss knows what they’re up to and wants them to stop. The man, who happens to speak fluent Japanese, offers them two first class tickets back to Japan if they agree to give up on their mission and go. Hiro refuses this and acts noble though it seemed like Ando might’ve been ready to take him up on his offer.

When Hiro gets out of the van, he’s all ready to tell the “Big Boss” where he can put his plane tickets when he sees that the Big Boss is in fact, his father (played by George Takei).

Nathan tries to track Peter down, with the help of Mohinder. Mohinder explains some more about the DNA markings of the heroes and how Peter could be the most important person to the study. He goes on to explain how Peter’s ability to absorb powers like a sponge could put himself and others in danger if he comes in contact with too many powers or an unstable power (like the one Nuclear Man has?). The two set off to find Peter.

Peter tracks down the invisible man, Claude. Claude wants to be left alone and makes mention of others like Peter that he’s worked with. Peter asks if he can help him get a grip on his power. At first Claude’s all “leave me alone, I don’t want to deal with you” about it but he changes his mind. When Peter is getting ready to leave town, Nathan and Mohinder show up and attempt to talk him into staying so they can figure this out. Nathan suggests having his insane brother locked up for his own safety. Peter ends up running out of the room, past the guard Nathan brought with him. The guard never saw Peter though because Claude was standing in the hall. Peter absorbed Claude’s power of invisibility and Nathan and Mohinder assumed he got away.

Niki is still locked up in a padded room. A doctor attempts to talk to her but Niki insists they give her another shot to keep Jessica weak. The doctor leaves Niki unrestrained. DL, able to walk through walls, stops in Niki’s room for a visit. He says he’s having a hard time with Micah. We also learned earlier in the episode that he doesn’t have the money to pay the rent. He begs Niki to leave with him somehow but she insists she’s better off in there. Later Niki agrees to sit with the doctor. The doctor says in order to help she needs to see Jessica. At first Niki refuses but since she’s worried about Micah and DL, she agrees. We don’t get to see what happens next.

So far we’ve only seen Micah fix a phone but apparently his abilities extend further than just broken pay phones. He goes to an ATM machine, touches the screen and withdraws a very large sum of money. When he returns home, he dumps his backpack out for his dad and after DL sees the giant pile of crisp twenty-dollar bills, Micah tells him that just like him and his mother, he too has a secret.

All of the tests that HRG’s doctor did to Sylar started to take its toll on the evil serial killer. HRG insisted that they keep him alive until “they” determine Sylar is no longer useful. Later, the doctor calls HRG at home to tell him that Sylar died. Mr. Bennett is not happy about this but tells him to prepare the body for shipping. The doctor removes Sylar’s restraints and predictably, Sylar opens his eyes. When HRG goes to see Sylar’s body, he removes the sheet to find the beaten body of the doctor. Sylar is behind him and when he turns around, Sylar asks him how Claire is.

So that’s that. Now here’s what I’m wondering: Why can’t DL get a job? Seriously. He can walk through walls and put his hands through stuff. You’d think he could make an honest living doing something. I suppose that might be boring for the plot but Micah stealing thousands of dollars from an ATM machine made my tummy hurt. He seems like such a good kid who obviously has no sense of right and wrong, as he doesn’t seem to be at all remorseful for what he did.

Also, Hiro – I get that he’s on a mission but how long is he going to make Ando go with him? Why hasn’t he offered Ando an out yet? Don’t get me wrong, I adore Hiro and I’m not saying Ando would definitely take the opportunity to walk away from this mission but still, at some point Hiro’s going to have to walk alone. The question is, will it be before or after Ando gets seriously hurt or worse?

No mention of the great and powerful Linderman this time around. Though we did get to see a brief glimpse of someone with obvious power (super or not). Hiro’s dad. How does he know what Hiro’s been up to? Also, the man said that Hiro thinks he has powers. How does his dad know that much but doesn’t seem to believe (at least that’s what the man in the van implied) that its actually the case.

And, while we’re on the subject of Hiro. He is a man of faith – I get that. But why is he so insistent that he find this sword in order to have his power back? He had the powers without the sword. Why isn’t he trying to figure out what “broke” inside of him to prevent him from being able to bend time and space again?

Finally, Claire’s mother is not only alive but she has the ability to create and manipulate fire. This explains the big Kermit, TX fire. Claire’s ability to heal herself explains how she survived it. The question is, why is Meredith pretending to be dead and why didn’t she know her daughter survived? There’s definitely a story there.

What did you think of the episode? Do you have any possible answers to my questions? If so, we’d love to hear your thoughts! Comment below or check out our Heroes Forum, here
