I am a sucker for TV shows bringing big stars together who also happen to be married in real life, and it literally always helps if Gotham is involved. (R.I.P. my sweet, batcrap obsession.) So you know I’m positively riddled with excitement Morena Baccarin to welcome her real-world hubby Ben McKenzie onto her CBS drama Sheriff Country when Season 2 hits the 2026 TV schedule to follow up on that wild finale cliffhanger.
Though McKenzie previously portrayed a detective-turned-commissioner on Gotham opposite Baccarin’s Dr. Lee Thompkins, they’ll both be sharing the same authoritative position in Sheriff Country, albeit in two different jurisdictions. And if you want a quick shot of what to expect from the episode…I’m not so sure this social media video will do the trick. But it IS pretty adorable, even as a Family Guy reference. Just watch.
Awww, ain’t they a coupla stinkers? Speaking of, it sounds like something smells fishy about McKenzie’s arrival on Sheriff Country.
In the Season 2 premiere, which will be titled “Cyclone,” Baccarin’s Sheriff Mickey Fox is having a hard time dealing with a major revelation about her family while also keeping focus on trying to rescue a young woman from her troublesome current situation. The woman’s downward spiral, which involves a no-nonsense criminal organization, makes it clear that a peaceful life in Edgewater is balanced by a growing threat just below the surface.

It doesn’t sound like Ben McKenzie is joining the show as part of that criminal enterprise, but I suppose there could be a twist or two involved. As far as what’s been confirmed, he’s set to take on the role of Sheriff Wade, who steps in from a neighboring area to help Mickey out with her newest case. To circle back to possible twists, Sheriff Wade is keeping some secrets close to the vest that appear to be connected to the current goings-on.
Considering Morena Baccarin and McKenzie have already played an on-screen couple in Gotham, even getting married by Harvey Bullock despite any and all narrative leaps that could have potentially kept them apart, they presumably didn't want to go the same route in the CBS drama, which adds further fuel to the "Wade might be a bad guy" fire.
To that end, McKenzie himself shared a comment on the Instagram post that suggested making his character as much a part of the show title as Mickey. As he put it:
