Call Of Duty Alumni Form New Studio U4iA Games

Do you remember back in the day there were these franchises called Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero? They used to be great games that sold well until one day, after their umpteenth release within a six-month time frame they ceased to exist.

Industry veterans Dusty Welch and Chris Archer have a collective 34 years in the business working on ubiquitously familiar franchises such as Tony Hawk, Call of Duty and Guitar Hero. Two of the three have died from over-saturation and it’s possible that Call of Duty could go the same way if Activision isn’t careful. Archer and Welch, alternatively, wanted to branch out away from the franchise-killing publisher to work on something a little less tedious.

Chris Archer, chief creative officer of U4iA Games, kept it short and sweet, saying…

“We founded U4iA Games to satiate our passion for creating new IP and game experiences while honing in on the industry’s sweet spot,” ... “Many studios are making casual games for a core audience. We’re making core games for a social audience.”

U4iA’s first title will be a freemium, hardcore, first-person social game. I have no idea exactly how it’s going to be but the highlight of today’s social games is that they don’t have to be lame or ugly like Mafia Wars or other low-budget titles. With tools such as Flash Player 11 and Unity available, many social games can look about on-par with what you might find on today’s generation of consoles.

U4iA Games’ freemium FPS will head into beta sometime in 2012. Want to keep up to date on what these guys are up to? Be sure to check out their Official Website.
