How do you fit an enormous hedgehog into a Nintendo DS? Apparently BioWare figured it out. Sega announced on Friday that the Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood has gone gold.
Dark Brotherhood is the first role-playing game of the Sonic franchise. Essentially, Sonic and his friends from previous games are out to stop a mysterious new threat to their world. It's estimated to have 40 hours of gameplay total, assuming you do all the sidequests, so it's not just a platformer "with RPG elements." It's a real RPG, with customization, tactical combat, and yes, a coherent storyline. The game will be split into two acts: the first will be in the familiar Sonic world, while the second will be in a different, less cuddly dimension.
As I've said before, if Square can make a coherent RPG about Mario (or Disney, for that matter), I'm pretty confident BioWare can pull this one off. The game has dialogue trees just like any other BioWare game so I think it'll be entertaining to hear what Sonic sounds like when he's in a dick mood. Dark Brotherhood is set for a September 30th release.
