TGS 08: Star Ocean 4 Release Date Finally Announced Fans of Japanese sci-fi action RPGs finally have something to look forward to for next year. During their Tokyo Game Show Press Conference, Microsoft announced a March 3rd US release date for Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope.

The fact that Star Ocean 4 is currently a Xbox 360 exclusive is a really big deal. A Japanese developed Xbox exclusive game is a bizarre choice for a country that hates the Xbox. It makes the surprise E3 announcement that Final Fantasy XIII would appear on both PS3 and Xbox 360 (in the US) seem pretty tame by comparison.

I was a huge fan of Star Ocean: The Second Story for the PS1, the first title that came to the States. I really wanted to like Star Ocean 3: Till the End of Time for the PS2 but the game just seemed to drag on and on. The combat system is a really interesting counter to the standard turn-based system of most Japanese RPGs; in Star Ocean, you run around and actually attack instead of simply pressing the "X" button over and over. There's also a very in-depth item creation system in both games, too.

It's not all bad news for Sony gamers, though. The first game in the series is about to make its way stateside for the first time ever as a PSP remake, entitled Star Ocean: The First Departure. It will arrive on October 21st.
