One of the things we noticed about the casting of Watchmen is that Zach Snyder avoided a lot of big “named” cast members, relying more on actors with small but dedicated followings who could pull off a more solid story without reputations and attitudes getting in the way. I remain convinced Snyder made a brilliant move by casting actors like Jackie Earle Haley and Billy Crudup over others like Tom Cruise and Keanu Reeves, both of whom were in talks or attached to Watchmen at some point.
Snyder is continuing that trend of smaller but dedicated followings with some of the supporting cast. The most recent addition: Matt Frewer, currently found on Sci-Fi’s Eureka and known to dedicated sci-fi fans as Max Headroom, the “computer generated” icon of the ‘80s. Frewer is currently filming on Watchmen as Moloch the Mystic (aka Edward Jacobi), according to MTV Movie Blog. The character is a crime boss mastermind and a magician, with a demonic appearance that includes pointed ears. The character is a lesser part of the story, but still an integral one, especially if they connect him in to the story the way he should be. Depending on how he is used, we could see Moloch at several stages in life, from his height as a crime boss, tangling with the heroes of the movie, to his later life as an aged older man. As a fan of Matt Frewer’s work, it’s great to see his name added to the cast of what could be the greatest comic book adaptation ever. The actor is certainly perfect for the role and versatile enough to play Moloch at various stages. This news just gets me even more excited about seeing Watchmen brought to life.
