Filming has begun in Costa Rica on M. Night Shyamalan’s 1000 A.E., a sci-fi thriller that unites Karate Kid star Jaden Smith with his father, who happens to be superstar Will Smith. I’m amazed how older Jaden looks in this first photo snapped on the film’s set … and how much he looks like a young Will. Genetics. They’ll play those types of games, won’t they? Check out the picture (via IndieWire’s Shadow and Act blog), and we’ll discuss underneath the shot:

Stephen Gaghan and Gary Whitta post-apocalyptic screenplay finds a father and son crash landing on an alien planet, where they fight to survive and figure out of there’s anything left of the human race. Eventually, there will be a moment where the son, an untested warrior, has to rise to the challenge of rescuing his father from danger. I pray he shouts, “Aw, HELL no!” during the dramatic action sequence. Like father, like son.

No matter what you think of Shyamalan’s latest films, the father-son Smith pairing should be enough the guarantee a huge opening weekend for the sci-fi film. What do you think of Jaden’s futuristic costume? It has a little Star Trek or Battlestar Galactica in its sleek design. But for now, we’re still digging up details on the film. We know it co-stars Zoe Kravitz and Sophie Okonedo, playing relatives of he Smith boys. And Sony would like to have 1000 A.E. (sometimes known as After Earth) in theaters by June 2013. Are you interested? Will you see it in theaters? Let us know.
