Late last year we noted that Judd Apatow will be bringing together some ‘Freaks and Geeks’ alumni for the stoner comedy The Pineapple Express. James Franco and Seth Rogen have the lead roles and Rogen wrote the script along with Evan Goldberg. David Gordon Green, who has made critically acclaimed indie films like George Washington and All the Pretty Girls, is on board to direct.
While doing publicity for Spider-Man 3, Franco gave First Showing an interview and opened up on some of the particulars of what will be a highly anticipated movie for Apatow/Rogan fans. The general plot is about stoner buddies who run afoul of a drug gang. Franco said, “I play a low level pot dealer and Seth is my client. It's two characters that are completely unequipped for much of anything, especially battling heavily armed bad guys, and it suddenly switched to this action film, and the action is done in a very realistic way, and that's I guess part of the humor.” Yeah James, I guess that would be part of the humor.
Franco also feels that Green, despite being a low budget indie drama director, will fit right into the Apatow machine. Although some of the things he says on that subject don’t make a lot of sense. After stating that Apatow allows for a lot of improvisation and that Green also used improve in his dramas, he opines, “I mean sometimes he’ll (David) just say, well just tell a story about this thing in your life. That’s how his movies have achieved that very realistic slice of life quality. And so it’s working very well for this movie.” Uhhhh….yeah. Sounds like Franco might be sampling a little of his character’s product. Still, this whole thing sounds hilarious and has a great pedigree, so put this on the early list of comedies to watch for next year.
