Robert Rodriguez is big on promises, short on delivery. Fewer than half the movies he says he’s going to make ever actually get made. So keep that in mind when I tell you that now he’s promising another Predators movie. The news comes from Comic Con where Rodriguez told everyone that a sequel to Predators was likely.

He says their goal with the first movie was just to keep it simple and get things started. “So we could see what the appetite was, because the bigger movie would actually be what comes following that. That kind of sets up a new storyline, new location and world, and then you can really go crazy from there.”

While I believe that may indeed what they were thinking when making Predators, it’s kind of hard to believe that Fox would have any interest in sticking to that, after the current movie’s pretty abysmal box office performance. Maybe if they hadn’t held back, maybe if they’d actually put a few more of those good ideas in this movie, people would have bought a ticket. As it stands now, Predators has only made a pretty wimpy $42 million. It was made on the cheap though, which means they’ve made back the budget. Perhaps those meager earnings will be enough to get Fox to greenlight another one, but I wouldn’t count on it.
