Spies Like Us Remake

Here’s another remake rumor for you. Moviehole says the sort of classic Dan Aykroyd/Chevy Chase 1985 spy spoof comedy Spies Like Us is getting redone. It’s a pretty generic movie really, I mean they could have just made some other spy spoof and called it something else. But of course then they wouldn’t have name recognition and it’s become increasingly obvious that this is what these remakes are about more than anything. People want things they’re comfortable with and recognize, so the show up for things with names they attach to something good. It doesn’t really matter what it is. They could make this a college sex comedy and call it Spies Like Us and the thing would probably still do the same amount of box office business. Yes, the world really has become that dumb.

Right, so anyway there’s this almost certain to be horrible Spies Like Us remake. It’s being pushed by Warner Brothers and they’ve hired the guys who wrote Eurotrip, Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and Dave Mandel to write it. As Clint points out, Eurotrip wasn’t completely horrible so I guess this isn’t as bad as if it was being written by two of the six writers of Scary Movie.

But it’s still pretty bad.

The only way for it to get worse is for the remake to be shoved down into the recently overcrowded netherworld of direct-to-dvd movies which are soon to destroy our fond memories of everything good and beautiful which we’ve ever seen.

No word yet on who they’ll get to replace Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd. Maybe they could get Chevy Chase. This is exactly the kind of project he’s doing these days. Oddly enough, that might actually be worse than casting someone new to play his part, judging by the depths of unfunniness which Chevy has sunk to in the past couple of decades.
