Terrence Malick's Ben Affleck Drama Will Be Titled To The Wonder
Some movie titles tell audience members exactly what they are going to get when they buy a ticket. Battleship. Think Like a Man. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Pretty self-explanatory. And then there’s Terrence Malick, who has decided to name his latest effort To the Wonder, giving us absolutely no help as we try to deduce what mysteries of the universe the deliberate director will attempt to explore on screen.
The news comes from FilmRatings.com, which claims that Malick’s latest will be rated R (for some sexuality and nudity) and will reach theaters in 2012. Beyond that, it’s anyone’s guess.
Well, that’s not entirely true. The film is finished, to the point that Malick reportedly has moved on to Voyage of Time (with Brad Pitt and Emma Thompson), Lawless (which stars Ryan Gosling, Natalie Portman and Christian Bale) and Knight of Cups, which is in pre-production. With all of those plates spinning, you’d think To the Wonder would be heading to theaters sometime soon, but no release date has been confirmed.
What else do we know about Wonder? It stars an impressive array of talents, including Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Javier Bardem, Rachel Weisz, Michael Sheen, Amanda Peet, Barry Pepper and Tree of Life standout Jessica Chastain. IMDB claims it centers on “a man who reconnects with a woman from his hometown after his marriage to a European woman falls apart.” But with a name like To the Wonder, I expect it to be as ethereal and soul-searching as all of Malick’s efforts.
We have a title. We have a rating. We need a release date. Stay tuned.
