Could Spider-Man's Suit Have Powers? Here's What The Director Said

Arguably no Marvel superhero has a suit more iconic than that of Peter Parker a.k.a Spider-Man. For years, he has remained one of the most recognizable figures in all of comics with his red and blue garb. However, the suit doesn't just look awesome, it's always had an array of functions to help Spidey save the day. Jon Watts seems to have recognized this idea, as he recently hinted at an arsenal of potential tricks and secrets built into Tom Holland's Spider-Man: Homecoming suit.

While speaking with Comicbook.com at San Diego Comic-Con, Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts revealed that the Web Head's suit might have far more tricks up its sleeves than we previously thought. He said:

Well, the suit that Spidey was given in Civil War is a Stark suit, so you have to wonder with a Stark suit, what else can it do?

We already know that Tom Holland's Spider-Man suit features far more bells and whistles than any live-action Spider-Man who preceded him. Not only does he have mechanical web shooters, but also the suit features eyes that open and close, a full utility belt, and even the iconic Spidey signal. Peter Parker's stories are almost always coming of age tales, and as such it will be great fun to see the Web Head tinkering with his new toys and slowly but surely becoming more confident in his ability to use them. It has become a well-established fact that Tony Stark loves to throw as many bells and whistles as possible into his creations. After all, subtlety has never really felt like something he excels at.

During Comic-Con Jon Watts also spoke out about The Vulture's outfit in the movie, and the technological foundation that it has. With the promise of a superhero adventure grounded in the tech world, it feels safe to say that Spider-Man: Homecoming could revolve around the conflict between the suits as much as it is a conflict between a hero and a villain.

All that being said, there's a healthy balance that must be struck in the creation of Spider-Man's suit in order to make the movie work. Part of Spider-Man's charm stems from his average home life and his generally limited resources. Homecoming needs to recognize that this average kid cannot have a complete arsenal of weapons and tools to save the day, otherwise it takes away some of the novelty of Peter Parker as a hero for the everyman. We definitely want to see Spider-Man use some awesome gadgets during the course of his upcoming solo movie, but not at the expense of his own brain or superpowers.

Cinema Blend will bring you any and all details related to Spider-Man: Homecoming, as well as all of the other highly anticipated entries to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man will take center stage in his upcoming solo movie next summer on July 7, 2017.
