Based on the epic graphic novel by Frank Miller, 300 is a ferocious retelling of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. Facing insurmountable odds, their valor and sacrifice inspire all of Greece to unite against their Persian enemy, drawing a line in the sand for democracy. The film brings Millers (Sin City) acclaimed graphic novel to life by combining live action with virtual backgrounds that capture his distinct vision of this ancient historic tale.

300 director Zack Snyder burst on to the scene in 2004 as the guy behind a remake of George Romero's classic zombie horror flick Dawn of the Dead. For some horror aficionados remaking Romero is kind of like trying to remake Hitchcock, but Snyder impressed studio executives by delivering a new take on Romero's classic film that won over both audiences and critics. The film was a big enough hit to set Snyder up with whatever else he wanted to sink his teeth into next. He chose Frank Miller's graphic novel 300.

With the success of Sin City, another film based on one of Miller's acclaimed comics, Frank's material is a Hollywood hot property. Miller collaborates with Snyder on 300, but his role is much more limited than the co-directing credit he took on Sin City. Instead this is Zack Snyder's film, his first major Hollywood picture as both co-writer and director.

The film takes a dash of Sin City's literal comic book style, and adds a lot of color. That color's enough to make Snyder's gory film a hard R, after all this is the story of 300 Spartans fighting and killing thousands upon thousands of enemy soldiers. 300 will run red with blood.

Apparently, someone over at Warner Brothers likes what they've seen. They've already lined Snyder up for another high-profile comic translation. He's the man in charge of their long in development film version of "Watchmen". If Frank Miller's work is significant, than Watchmen is like the comic book Holy Grail. It's a massive piece of work, and a desperately important one. Screw it up, and Warner Brothers earns the ire of legions of comic nerds from here to eternity. If they're trusting Zack Snyder with it based on what they've seen of 300, then we may be in for something pretty special.

  • This film is based upon on a made up story. You guys make search about Thermopylae war.
  • a history teacher,

while I respect your dedication to history you must remember that this is based on a COMIC BOOK, not actual facts.

The comic book took liberties with actual history of the battle and the movie, basing itself off said comic book, did same.

Don't berate the film for this, berate the comic book.

You have a good point, but your attacking the wrong medium.

    P.S.

The movie was from the Spartans point of view, remember that.

  • I did not expect Warner Bros. Picture company, as one of the world’s largest producers of film and television entertainment to ignore the proven obvious historical facts, and damage its own reputation by showing the Persian army at the battle of Thermopylae as some monstrous savages, and thus create an atmosphere of public mistrust in its content, and hurt the national pride of the millions of Persians while doing so.

  • This movie not only belittled persia but also asia as a whole. I'm no fan of iranians coz i find them chauvanistic - you know, we did this we did that, worship us. But this movie implies that the greeks stood up to the might of asia and won. thats not true. the chinese would have smashed greece and even persia. and what about the hordes in central asia? they were no easy beats! Even alexander the Fag failed there. the only believable bit of information i got out of this movie was "greek style" and "boy lovers". I cannot believe the amount of clout greeks have in holywood ever since that joke of a movie my fat hairy greek ass wedding. Go iran. I'm on your side on this one! Dare holywwod to make a movie on the fall of constantinople - u know hairy ugly muslim turks vs. the holy and superior byzantines - whats the bet the american greek lobby would sue the filmaker. WB u suck!
  • As a white guy fond of history and mythological tales from all around the world, I should say that this is the simpliest and stupidest piece of movie shit I've seen in a long while... Once again Hollywood they know how to turn epic and myth and history into brainless and cheesy arty shit.

But what makes me even more angrier is that ONCE AGAIN, we allow a fascist like Mister Miller , already responsible for scandalous and repulsive shit like Sin City to spread the nauseous ideology of the American Neocon on a large scale, because kids and people want their monthly dose of blood and guts, and won't care about the ideology behind it.

But let me tell you something: I am European, and I'm fed up. Fed up that these guys try to sell us their values, their freedom (Iraki style), and steal our culture, mythology, history for their political purposes, and continuously insult other civilisations as well, like they do with the Persians in 300.

We Europeans must wake up and say no to such spectacle of hate, violence, sadism, refuse it for what it is: a shameful use of our myths and legends for political hatred.

They try to sell it to us as a "fun" product. It's not. It's an extreme right, neocon, stupid, and boring piece of shit.

    Enough!!!
  • i believe this movie is to cheap and worthless ,children may like it thou ,just dont take this movie serious .none of the 300 spartans stayed alive so no one knows what did they wear or how did they fight i kinda agree with you neshra about showing persians as evil and barbarians and blacks? thats just funny. i hope the people who watch this movie will take it as a hollywood movie not a historic source.
  • Reply to loveataturk:

Turks have been denying their cruelty and savageness, but you just proved them wrong. So I suppose you are proud of 1915 Genocide. You must be, because your name shows you love Ata Turk who is equal to Hitler for those who know the fact about Young Turks.

Persians: As you know Iranian president has been saying that Holocaust did not exists and that really pissed off Jewish folks. So with their power in US media they are going to get back at you. They know how to piss off a Persian! Tell them that you are Arab, right?
So the put African as Aryan Persian king and dressed the troops in Arab wardrobe and fudge the numbers and va A la.

And man if you ever watch the documentary of 300 on the History Channel you realize how dumbF**k those so called historians are. Well what do you expect it is “Distory Channel”. They have no idea where the Greeks got their knowledge of Mythology, Mathematics, Literature, Science, law, and running a Government! Yep, Mesopotamia where everybody borrowed their knowledge.

So Thanks to Sumerians, Akkadians, Babylonians and Assyrians who showed them the way.
  • whew I thought I was the only 1 in the US with a indie mind damn im sick of this 1 sided story telling 1ce again the greatest manipulator does it again
  • guys just relax!!!
    its just a movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I am not anti-Persian, but I have to admit this movie is really enjoyable. Iranian friends, do not feel sad. We thought those "brave" Greeks the lessons of their lives for 5 hundred years:)))) Long live the TURKS.
  • There shouldn't be any arguments between the Greeks and the Persians due someone elses fantasy. The Greeks and the Persians respected each other to a very high level. It is not Hollywood's fault either. The only thing that Frank Miller gets rightin 300 is that there is a legend of 300 Spartans who were defeated by a larger Persian army. In an interview with Esquire Magazine, April 2007 Iss. (I'm sure you can get a copy), one of the Q & A goes like this: Esquire: You did fanatical research for your graphical novel and then blatantly diregarded historical accuracy. Why ? Frank Miller: the Spartans were dressed like beetles when they went into battle. They wore half their body weight in armor. And I wanted them to be big, physical, and fast. As a cartoonist, I am a caricaturist.
  • I think the visuals of this movie (300) look stunning & fascinating, but I am dissapointed by the fact that once again white people are heroes & people of color are depicted as savages. How come middle eastern people like Jesus(Yeshua the Messiah) are continuously portrayed as western European, but in negative portrayals of middle eastern people they use dark(& often African actors). I hope that mainstream America will progress past these blatantly racist historical inaccuracies. In the "Passion of Christ" Mel Gibson took painstaking effort to release a mainstream movie in Aramaic, but couldn't seem to find a original semetic person to play the part. Would we have Denzel Washington play George Washington? As a multi-cultural believer in a middle eastern messiah it is highly offensive to me.
  • I haven't seen the movie yet!! but I heard a lot about it last couple of days... First I thought "well ok it's comic, let them portray Persians as monsters...people know it's joke or rather just a qute game kind film" but when I read these comments I feel sorry for those who think this shit 300 and the story is true...
Greeks themselves named the Persian king as Xerxes, what the meaning???

And to american audience: Enjoy the movie for 2 hours but don't get brain washed by Hollywood..always look up the original sources..even Greek books

And to Warner Bros. : You guys must be enjoying this...any comment on this movie means CASH for you..
  • dear payam its not greeks fault its hollywood for making more money. spart was a very small country and the termopylae battle you can read planty of books about it if you want to know what really happend there ,300 in number of soldiors who could fight with swords and most of em were older than 50 but thousand of them were stonning from the hills and when hydranos told Xerxes about their age , Xerxes stopped the war in termopylae and let em stay away, thats not what im saying thats what greeks wrote, they say 300 for increase their nationalism . greeks have mostly tales not history , since we dont have a nationalist gov to stop these movies, we are like west indians in the age of john wayne movies, we cant do anything expect getting pissed watching how history getting faked , alexender the movie is another one, roxana doughter of darius was black and alexender was blonde , interesting theres a picture of alexender available thou and if roxana was dark then i have to be dark too , first i thought darius was afghan , damn .these kinds of movies really piss me off , 300 was the worst movie iv ever seen.
  • I just can say:
SHAME ON U LIERS AND SICK HATERS.....SHAME
  • I saw the trailer when I went to saw other one and it amaze me a lot. I think i'ts gonna be a great movie. I never see movies like that but this one looks very spectacular. When I see the trailer some parts look like dreams. Those dreams we don't know where came from because in all our life we haven't see those things to dream about it. It looks very real.

  • it's shameful, they got the power in hollywood so they make what they want, let you greeks stay happy with these lies about your fake history with no clue , tale.....
  • Iranains are not against any Culture and History. We are against wrong History.
  • Dear Creeks you know better than me that Xerxes means King of Heros ! This is a Creec name that is choosen by your ancesstors for Persian King : Khashayarshaah,

And ALso I think you just know about history of your country not others , maybe you think that just you had civilisation and nor Chines, Egyptions, Babalonians etc! I offer you just search in internet about Cyres , Persian Empire etc, I will learn more my Creecc Friends ! I am not persian but I think your statements is like kids that want to say we are right . • when a government decides to remove a nation first he tries to bombard their culture and show them wild and cruel and it is easy when you have Holywood.

Do not let them to play with your mind.

if you read history it says that first greek started the war in time of dariush king and in his son ,khashayar shah, period he because of security of borders he did so .

  • Arguing about what is accurate and what is false in a FICTIONAL movie should not be taking place in a board like this.
Neither should using FICTIONAL stories to decide your opinion on any nation.
Nor should the comments of any nation based on FICTIONAL inuendos be taken personally.
It saddens me that people have to point out historical (aka: slanted) perspectives just because they beleive their opinion actually matters somehow to the rest of us. Just go watch the movie and be entertained.

This movie looks intense and i'll be leaving in 10 minutes to watch it! :D
  • Why you Americans hate Persians?
Both "Alexander" and "300" movies showed a false picture of Persians, what we did wrong? What's your problem with Persians? Just read some history books and see who was the bad guy. Romans and Greeks were brutal and wild, what you can call "Art", "Love", "Peace" in ancient world, comes from Persian Empire, most of your kings were cruel, do you think that your current position in world will stay forever? No, buddies, it's impossible, there's nothing absolute in this world but God. And when and the day you lost your dominance on the globe, it's Chinese, Japanese, Russians, Indians, etc. who will be eager beaver to revenge, don't forget that you never respect any nation in your movies, no matter "300", "Alexander", "Indiana Jones", or "007", what you all showed in them was "idiot non-Americans", "idiot non-Romans", "idiot non-Greeks".

  • Just last night I saw 300. It was truly awesome and breathtaking. I LOVE it. Kudos to Frank Miller and Zack Snyder who did a marvellous job. Gerard Butler gave a fantastic performance and so did the rest of the cast. True professionals to the craft. Everyone must see it.

As for the facts of history, the truth is there, it's clear as the day.

    300 Rules. Period
  • To hamed as a fellow Greek, youdeny can not history the battle of thermopylae really did take place and im sorry to say that your persians got slaughtered, its unfortunate but IT IS HISTORY and you cannot turn back time with your comments on Iranian culture. If u really did know your history then you would know that, although this film is based on history it has been re-mastered by Frank Miller's novel. But nevertheless you should change your preception and views and accept that the persians got FUCKED UP i think it was 120,000 persians against the famous 300:O
  • HI. AS A PERSIAN IM SO SORRY FOR MR.MILLER WHO IS NOT SO WELL EDUCATED TO STUDY ABOUT THE HUMAN KIND HISTORY. ITHINK THAT THIS COMING MOVIE IS JUST A PIECE OF A GREATER LIE ABOUT IRANIAN PEOPLE AND THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD. SO NOT TO SUPPOSE ME AS A STRICT PERSIAN, BUT AS A PERSON WHO HAS STUDIED ALOT ABOUT THE HISTORY I WOULD DENY ALL THE SCENES SHOWN IN THIS MOVIE AND RESPECT THE IRANIAN CULTURE BECAUSE THE HISTORY OWES PERSIAN PEOPLE AND THEIR EFFORTS FOR PROMOTION OF THE WORLD CULTURE. THATS ALL.
