To celebrate this week's release of Iron Man 2 on Blu-ray and DVD, Paramount Home Entertainment has released a clip of actor Clark Gregg introducing us to the closest thing we've got to Stark's powered armor. Gregg was invited to visit the Raytheon Sarcos research facility in Salt Lake City to get a firsthand look at Raytheon's XOS 2 exoskeleton suit. You may have seen videos of this puppy making the rounds earlier in the year, but it's a dandy gadget, so it's definitely worth watching again. The press release describes the suit thusly:

Reminiscent of billionaire genius Tony Stark’s high-tech robotic suit in IRON MAN 2, the XOS 2 is essentially a wearable robot that amplifies its wearer’s strength, endurance and agility. The super-human XOS 2 is built from a combination of sensors, actuators and controllers and enables a user to easily carry a man on his back or lift 200 pounds several hundred times without tiring. XOS 2 is also agile enough to let its wearer kick a soccer ball, punch a speed bag, or climb stairs and ramps with ease. Designed to assist deployed soldiers, the XOS 2 could be in the field in as little as five years.

Like I said, pretty damn cool. Although if you ask me it's more reminiscent of the power loaders from Aliens than the Iron Man suit. Or maybe a beta version of the powered armor from Heinlein's Starship Troopers. Either way, it's another little section of our world that's carved straight out of the science fiction we've been reading for decades. Now I just want my freakin' flying car.
