The DVD Blend Shouts Wolverines As It Battles Russkies

Each week DVDs come out. Some of them are worth your time and money and some aren't. Some of them are movies I've seen, and some of them aren’t. Regardless, I give you my opinion on the big releases of the week. If the releases sound like something you want to buy, just click the link to go to Amazon.com and you’ll support Cinema Blend with a few pennies. Take it or leave it, here's the DVD Blend.

Cinema Blend Pick of the Week:

Red Dawn (Collector’s Edition)

It probably seems silly now, but when Red Dawn hit theaters in 1984, the idea of a Soviet invasion was a very real fear for myself and my friends. We were convinved that the Russkies were going to parachute in at any time and force us to hole up in the woods and defend our school and country, just like Red Dawn’s Wolverines. Thankfully, I can write that fear off now. After all, the Cold War is over and I’m no longer ten years old. Still, Red Dawn is a perfect representation of its era and a film that helped move along the career of quite a few notable names, from Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey (pre-Dirty Dancing) to C. Thomas Howell and Lea Thompson (a must have for any decent ‘80s flick). Logical or not, the scene of students looking out their school windows at the parachuting army landing in their backyard is enough to give anyone chills. John Milius’s ‘80s patriotic adventure/drama is a must see if you haven’t already been introduced. Wolverines!!!

Worth mentioning:
Row 1 - Cell 0 Factory Girl - Sienna Miller stars as Edie Sedgwick, muse for noted artist Andy Warhol. This extended cut includes 15 minutes inserted back into the movie, although reportedly the new cut still doesn’t fix issues with a lack of depth and truly looking at who Sedgwick, Warhol, and all the other characters truly were beyond a surface level.Row 1 - Cell 2 Premonition - Sandra Bullock’s attempt at supernatural mystery earlier this year may have been poorly received, but it’s gotta be better than the retreating military of The Hills Have Eyes 2. Consider this to fit into the 50% of Bullock’s career that is best defined as fluff and enjoyed with a few drinks and no need for brain cells.
