Square Enix finally broke the silence on Kingdom Hearts III at this weekend's D23 Expo. As part of a larger panel on upcoming Disney games, we received confirmation of the first Pixar world in a main Kingdom Hearts title. In addition, we learned that the game will finally be released sometime in 2018.
I think it's fair to say Toy Story is the movie that put Pixar on the map. That movie basically set the stage for all computer animated films that followed and kicked off an insanely strong track record for the studio. So if Sora, Goofy and Donald are going to visit any single Pixar film, it makes sense that Toy Story would be the first choice. To clarify, we don't know if Toy Story is the only Pixar world featured in the upcoming action game, but we wouldn't be surprised if that turns out to be the case.
If you're new to this whole business and are confused by seeing Donald Duck chatting up Woody, perhaps a brief explanation is in order. In the Kingdom Heart games, Sora and his pals jump from one Disney world to the next, usually teaming up with the local heroes in order to overthrow the corresponding baddies while simultaneously battling against antagonists unique to the series, the Heartless. Along the way, they run into all sorts of other familiar faces from Disney lore, as well as a handful of Final Fantasy characters.
That is the most basic rundown I can think of, as to truly explain Kingdom Hearts would require four weeks, a bunch of maps, pictures, and bits of yarn to help connect related items in a room the size of a football field.
Anyway, we've been waiting on any KH3 news and Square Enix has finally delivered. Since Disney now owns several more big properties since the last KH game came out, fans have been speculating for years where Sora and Co. might go in this next game. Now that we've seen Toy Story, wouldn't it be great if the next trailers focused on the ongoing Civil War in Marvel or the struggle between the Empire and the Rebels in Star Wars? It's kind of wild, but also 100 percent possible since all of those properties now fall under the Disney umbrella.
The "trailer" above is more than five minutes long, so we get to see all sorts of cool action unfold, beginning with what looks like Sora waging war in the world inspired by Hercules. That's followed by some sweet, sweet Toy Story action and cutscenes that look even better than the original film.
Whether or not you're a fan of Kingdom Hearts, it's still pretty cool seeing all of these worlds collide. Also, damn, this game looks sharp as hell.
As always, we're open to your thoughts in the comments. What world do you want Sora to visit next?
