The Surprising Way Players Found A Secret Location In God Of War

Kratos with a marked tree in God of War

On top of all the epic encounters and fun secrets you'll discover while sticking to the story of God of War, many of the game's best moments lay just off the beaten path. But while standard exploration will uncover hidden nooks aplenty, players actually turned to an outside source to track down one of the game's best-kept secrets. It's simple, really; they consulted a map.

There are some light spoilers for God of War ahead, so consider yourself warned if you're still playing the game and want to try and find all of its hidden areas solo.

To be clear, we're not talking about the in-game map of God of War, which slowly pulls back the fog and reveals areas Kratos and his son have explored on their journey. No, we're referring to the map that came with the game's Stone Mason Edition.

Children of the 90s will recall a time when epic RPGs and adventure games sometimes came with a cloth map. Well, if you picked up the Stone Mason Edition of God of War, you were treated to a blast from the past in the form of, you guessed it, a cloth map for the game. While those types of maps are usually just nice collectibles, Santa Monica Studio decided to go one step further with their map, making it the only place where players could figure out a way to access a secret area in the game. Obviously, the plan was that fans would figure out how to get to the area and then share it online, as it would have been lame to lock off an area to all but those who bot a special edition of God of War.

Anyway, according to Screenrant, Redditor SkipOneEBR posted a picture of the map and asked folks to help him solve a mystery. If you've been cruising around the lake in God of War, you may have noticed that there are runes etched into the scales of the World Serpent. Using those runes and the cloth map, as well as the in-game alphabet, players were able to solve a riddle relating to the two dwarf brothers, Brok and Sindri. In the game, those are the fine lads who keep helping you upgrade your equipment.

So, it's a bit complicated, but here's what you need to do.

To reveal the great treasure stand inside the golden circle and look straight ahead to Tyr's temple now look to the left brazier look back to Tyr's temple look to the right brazier and back to left brazier. Having just looked to the left brazier now look back straight ahead to Tyr's temple again now look down to the floor then look up to the right brazier and then back to the left brazier and finally look to Tyr's temple to reveal the forgotten treasure.

If you do all of that, you'll find your way to Muspelheim tower via an interdimensional rift. Inside, you'll earn the Forbidden Grip of the Ages for your ax, an increase to all of Kratos' stats, and even your light combo will earn an additional effect in combat.

Even Director Cory Barlog took to Twitter to congratulate the community on uncovering the location, calling it one of God of War's ultimate secrets. That leads us to believe maybe there are even more uncovered surprises still waiting in the game.
