Gearbox and Sega let loose a handful of new screenshots for the upcoming first-person shooter, Aliens: Colonial Marines. While most of the shots are typical alien-shooting fanfare, one of the screenshots diverts from the rest and shows off a new kind of alien breed attacking the marines, which is very interesting.

The new aliens appear to have some green glowing goop inside the upper arc of the head. While I'm no xenologists, I'm taking a wild guess and assuming that the green goop, when shot, bursts out of their head. The upside would seem like it's a weak point for the aliens. The downside is that it looks like the green goop could be acid, and when you shoot it the whole thing explodes and sprays everywhere. I don't think I need to talk about the dangers of a head-sprinkler of acid.

Anyway, we don't see what happens when the green goop gets shot but I'm sure we'll get a look at it soon enough. The rest of the screenshots are all standard-fare. We see some guns, we see some aliens, we get some action. It looks like the righteous follow-up to James Cameron's Aliens that the fans truly deserve.

You can check out the new screenshots for the game below, a few of which come from our friends at AVP Galaxy. Aliens: Colonial Marines is set for release for the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U in early 2013.
