The day we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived. This week, you can finally become legend…of the ice rink, as NHL 15 launches for PlayStation consoles. There’s also a classic Mega Man game hitting PSN this week, alongside some game nobody has ever heard about called Destiny.
To be fair, I’m sure there are a few hockey fans out there who absolutely agree with that opening paragraph. They’re excited for this year’s trip to the digital NHL and could not care less about the latest first-person shooter to hit the market. Considering Destiny is the most pre-ordered new IP in the history of video games, however, I’m guessing that those folks are in the minority as this week’s game launches get underway.
Honestly, I was surprised to discover that any other games were launching alongside Destiny this week. But I guess that NHL 15 is different enough so that, for the most part, the two new games won’t be in direct competition with each other. It’s kind of like when a new Marvel movie hits the theaters and the only other movie to release that week is a new romantic comedy. There’s a good chance that they’ll both do well and not fight over too many common consumer dollars.
It almost feels redundant to be talking about Destiny at this point. We’ve had a couple of 2Player back-and-forths discussing the game before and after the beta launch, as well as a roundtable discussion pondering the future of the game. There’s also the fact that, even though the game doesn’t officially launch until tomorrow, you could be playing it right now. Anyone who pre-ordered the digital version can already download it early, and the servers are currently up and running. So, yeah, unless you’re waiting on your physical version to arrive in the mail or hit store shelves, there’s a good chance you’re already playing the digital version right now.
According to the PlayStation Blog, Sony’s home and portable consoles are otherwise having a light week. It feels a bit odd, after so many weeks in a row of large launch schedules, to see everything else just drop off of the radar. If you aren’t one of the millions of people excited for Destiny or NHL 15, you’re not going to have a heck of a lot to look forward to this week.
In fact, the only other launch for PlayStation is a digital version of Mega Man X5 as a PSone Classic. Join X and Zero on a quest to destroy a Maverick threat on Earth for the PlayStaiton 3, Vita and PSP.
So, in short, Destiny. Destiny, Destiny, Destiny-Destiny Destiny…Destiny.
