NBA Live 14's debut on Xbox One and PS4 has fallen short of EA's expectations. The b-ball game's currently sitting at a 46 Metacritic rating, making it one of the worst reviewed launch games for the new consoles. EA hopes they can right the ship, though.

"I’m not going to lie; it’s been a rough week. As you can imagine, this isn’t exactly the NBA LIVE comeback story we were hoping for this year," executive producer Sean O'Brien said on the EA Sports website. "We hear loud and clear that some of you are disappointed in various aspects of NBA LIVE 14, and I’m sorry if the game doesn’t live up to your expectations. Looking at your feedback, we have laid out a plan to make NBA LIVE 14 a better game as quickly as we can."

NBA Live has been on hiatus since Live 10. EA attempted to reinvent the series with NBA Elite 11 but ultimately cancelled all but the iOS version. NBA Live 13 was supposed to be the franchise's comeback but was scrapped right before launch. It's a shame that, after all those missteps, NBA Live 14 was released in such rough shape.

One major criticism from players is that the learning curve is too steep. O'Brien says that they're planning to add new ways for players to get adjusted to the controls. The development team has also introduced new guides to the NBA Live website. They'll be hosting Twitch live streams to further assist in player's skill development.

The visuals of NBA Live 14 will be cleaned up as well. The sorry state of the graphics and animations were the result of the development team prioritizing other elements of the game.

"We felt authentic gameplay, control and the connected experience would provide the best foundation for the future. As a result, game visuals and animation polish suffered. Improvements on these fronts are also in development now for NBA LIVE 14. You will notice in the coming weeks and months that the game’s visuals and animation will improve significantly."

In addition to smoothing out the rough spots of Live 14, the development team is also trying to make the best features better. The LIVE Season Mode will receive new BIG Moments and NBA Rewind games throughout the year. LIVE Ultimate Team will get some "big additions" soon as well.

Fortunately for basketball fans, they've got options besides waiting for EA to fix up NBA Live 14. EA doesn't have a monopoly over NBA games like they do with the NFL. NBA 2K14 has been racking up solid reviews and is available on next-gen and current-gen consoles.
