Do you like the television show or comic book The Walking Dead? Do you like survival-horror? Do you want to play a cooperative survival experience with friends or strangers? If you answered yes to the former questions, then you'll probably dig the DayZ mod which is now available for Arma II.
Arma II is a military simulator by Bohemia Interactive and 505 Games. It's about as close to real-life as you can get in an interactive game while still being fun. The original game is known for being extremely difficult and very challenging due to the learning curve. There's a lot to master when playing.
Modders decided to take that concept and apply a sort of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.-esque sense of survival and then top it all off by throwing in zombies. So not only do you have to eat and stay healthy but you also have to scavenge for equipment, ammo and gear, as well as watch out for bandits or teammates who might double cross you just to stay alive.
The launch trailer for the mod is atmospheric and intense and gives you a good idea of what to expect, DSO Gaming also has a live-action trailer up which is pretty funny and definitely worth checking out.
After watching the video I can honestly say that I'm almost convinced to get Arma II back just for that mod.
I think the video also shows off elements of gameplay that a lot of people were probably hoping newer Resident Evil games would encapsulate, especially the paranoia and fear-factors associated with open-world survival.
Nevertheless, if you're tired of the cheesy B-movie style of Resident Evil games and you're looking for something more serious and straight-laced, the DayZ mod might be right up your alley. You can learn more by visiting the Official Website.
