Square Enix released some new footage of the upcoming revamped rendition of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. The footage shows off the game's streamlined play mechanics, schmexy graphics and high attention to audible detail.

I never invested any time into the original atrocity that was Final Fantasy XIV. Everything seemed to burn up faster than a hydrogen blimp and the player circles lambasted the game from Tartarus to Valhalla, naming one thing after another that contributed to its unsurprising downfall.

Well, after first failing pretty bad, Square is back and showcasing some simple environmental and atmospheric aesthetics, keeping things simple and focusing on streamlined play.

From that little showcase I wasn't too impressed or thrilled and none of that looked like something I would want to play. But it's alpha footage of a completely retooled and revamped game. So I'm giving Square the benefit of the doubt. Right now the standard-fare theme park MMOs have become quite boring but if Square tools in a good story and puckers up some lovable combat mechanics and enjoyable questing mechanics, they could have an endearing, fan-centric winner on their hands.
