Free-To-Play Lord Of The Rings Online Gets Release Date

This fall, Lord of the Rings Online will be going free-to-play. Today Turbine revealed when exactly that will happen.

Starting on September 10th, you'll be able to download the game and play for no charge. A new LOTRO Store will allow you to purchase additional content such as expansion packs, additional character slots, or customization options. You can also opt for a monthly subscription and become a "VIP member," thereby gaining access to all of this premium content. VIP members also get priority server access, five character slots, a shared bank slot, and a monthly allotment of LOTRO Store points.

Last year, Turbine converted another MMO - Dungeons and Dragons Online - to the free-to-play revenue model. Apparently it rejuvenated that game's population and revenue. Perhaps they'll have the same luck with LOTRO.

If you want a preview of the F2P LOTRO, head over to the game's website. They're still accepting sign-ups for the ongoing beta.
