Gears Of War 4 Gameplay Trailer Doesn't Star Marcus Fenix

The Coalition revealed the first gameplay trailer for Xbox One exclusive Gears of War 4 today at E3 2015. The video introduced new heroes and villains coming in the third-person shooter.

Gears of War 4's trailer starts with two COG soldiers walking through a dark forest. The two approach the camera with their faces hidden, as if their identity is going to be a dramatic reveal. They're not Marcus Fenix or Cole Train, though. As it turns out, it's a male and female pair we've never seen before.

The man seems to be the main character of the game but I assume the woman is the co-op partner. We don't dind out anything too memorable about the two during the trailer. However, the man's name is apparently "JD."

The pair heads into a ruined town and hears an inhuman scream. There's a flash of something scrambling along a roof. The two give chase through the town.

As they approach a larger mansion near the coastline, their search is interrupted by a "windflare." This enormous tornado begins tearing up the stonework around them and firing lightning every which way. The two race past falling stones to take cover in the mansion. Here, they find tentacles and organic matter growing along the walls. Whatever this new threat is, it doesn't seem to be the Horde or the Lambent.

JD and his partner emerge into a courtyard and come face-to-face with their prey: an armadillo-like monster that shoots sharp quills from its tail. And he's not alone.

While JD manages to kill one with a shotgun blast and another with his Lancer's chainsaw, he's overwhelmed by a third. The monster leaps on top of him and prepares to devour him. The trailer ends before we can see the killing blow, though.

The end of the trailer then confirms that this new game is in fact Gears of War 4. The Xbox One shooter will be debuting in Holiday 2016.

In the meantime, though, we'll have the Gears of War Ultimate Edition to play. This Xbox One remake of the original Gears will be launching in August. The Coalition plans to hold a beta this week.
