In advance of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning's release last week, Electronic Arts has released the official launch trailer. It provides you with several reasons why you shouldn't overlook this single-player RPG.
One thing that really jumps out in the trailer is the colorful, larger-than-life visual. There's a good reason why it looks like a comic book: Spawn creator Todd McFarlane contributed to the artwork. While it's tough to gauge how much credit should be paid to him and how much should be paid to the lesser known artists working on the game, the point is that the game has a distinct look.
There's a lot of chatter about paths and destinies in the trailer. Player choice is a key component of the game. You'll build a custom character from four different races and three classes. You can mix abilities between the three main classes to create a uniquely talented hero. Players will also be confronted with choices in the story, a la Dragon Age.
The combat, though, is less RPG and more action game. It's a fast-paced and bloody affair, much like God of War. You even finish off opponents with little Quick-Time Events. True to an RPG, though, it also values careful preparation and strategy.
Reckoning will launch in North America on February 7th and in Europe on the 10th. A demo of the game, available on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, unlocks bonus items for the full game as well as Mass Effect 3.
