A brand new video has been released for Namco Bandai's upcoming Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. The video features more than 15 minutes of gameplay, as the player takes to the battlefield to engage in an epic fight against a giant lava boss. It's quite thrilling if you've been looking for an evolved RPG that hearkens a lot of its mechanics back to the turn-based days of JRPGs.

The game uses an active battle system and could probably best be described as a new-school version of the Chrono Trigger system. You can move around the battlefield freely but you still take turns, so to speak, casting spells and executing attacks. It's target based gameplay with freeroam movement.

The entire boss fight comes courtesy of Gametrailers. Check it out below.

I'm impressed. Not only does this game have an infectious art-style from the animation wizardry of Studio Ghibli, headed up by legendary auteur Hayao Miyazaki, but the classic storytelling at the heart of the game and the mix of old-school and new-school combat mechanics is absolutely brilliant. This is what the exploration and evolution of gaming culture should be about.

If the video didn't convince you that Ni no Kuni is a game you might be interested in, do yourself a favor and at least check out the free demo, which is currently available on the PlayStation Store right now. You can also also look for Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch to launch on January 22nd, 2013 exclusively for the PlayStation 3. Need more info? Feel free to fill your head with all the art-styling and story information over at the official website.
