The PlayStation Play 2014 summer promotion has gone live, once again highlighting four indie games and offering pre-order discounts for Plus subscribers, as well as money back depending on how many of the games you purchase. This year’s crop of titles includes Rogue Legacy, The Swapper, Hohokum and CounterSpy.
Each summer, PlayStation offers a collection of four games from independent developers that they feel are especially worth your attention. This year, two of the Play 2014 games have already stirred up quite a following on other platforms while the other two will be premiering first on PlayStation Consoles.
Also like in years past, the more you buy during the Play promotion, the more money you’ll get back. Get two games from the collection and Sony will eventually credit $3 back to your account. Get any three of these games and you’ll earn $6 back. Buy all four and you’ll earn a $10 return.
The Play 2014 was announced this afternoon on the PlayStation Blog and will be live for the next several weeks. As an added bonus, every single one of this year’s games is a cross-buy title, so purchasing it once will grant you access to your shiny new adventure on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.
In case you haven’t seen any of this year’s Play titles in action, here’s a quick sizzle reel for you to clap your peepers on.
As an added bonus for PlayStation Plus subscribers, you’ll be able to pre-order any of these titles for 20 percent off the listed price.
First up on the itinerary is Rogue Legacy, launching July 29 for $16.99 or $13.59 with the Plus pre-order discount. In this roguelike adventure, you’ll try to dive as deep as possible into an ever-changing castle. Each death passes your loot on to the next member of your lineage, and each hero will be born with some sort of a trait that could affect gameplay, such as color blind or dwarfism.
On August 5, The Swapper will be available for $19.99, or you can pre-order it with Plus for $15.99. In this unique puzzle game, you explore a mysterious space station with a device that lets you clone your own body and even take control of said clones. You’ll have to think outside the box if you hope to see this one through to the end, as the clever puzzles get trickier and trickier the further you dive into the unknown.
Hohokum finally arrives on August 12 for $14.99, or $11.99 with that Plus bonus. Even after playing the game at two E3 events, I have a hard time knowing how, exactly, to describe this free-flying sandbox of a game. So, yeah, if the trailer makes it look interesting, maybe it’s worth a purchase.
Finally, the whole shebang wraps up with the platforming shooter, CounterSpy on Aug. 19, also going for 14.99 or $11.99 with Plus.
