Sad news struck the gaming universe recently when it was reported that the creative design director who worked on multiple Pokemon games for Nintendo's platforms had been killed in an car accident due to a wind storm that was sweeping through the Washington state area.
According to TechnoBuffalo, creative design director Eric Medalle from the Pokemon Company crashed his car at around 1:30pm on the Sunday afternoon of March 13th, 2016 due to violent winds from storm taking place within the area. He had his young daughter with him at the time but she managed to come out of the crash okay.
According to the video report from the Western Washington news service King5, Medalle was taking his daughter out for a Sunday drive at Seward Park in Seattle, Washington that afternoon when the crash took place and a tree fell on the car. Medalle was 42 at the time of the accident.
The King5 report also indicates that a 35-year-old woman was at the scene and managed to pull Medalle's daughter from the wreckage and get her safely to the hospital. It was noted that Medalle had died at the scene of the crash.
The creative design director had been known for working on many of the most recent and most popular Pokemon titles for Nintendo's 2DS and 3DS, including Pokemon Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, X, Y, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black, White, Black 2 and Pokemon White 2 just to name a few. Neither report indicates whether or not Medalle was working on Nintendo's upcoming Pokemon Sun and Moon.
According to the Bulbapedia website that chronicles all things Pokemon and keeps wiki entries of most important subjects, it notes that Medalle had been with Nintendo working on logos for the games and had been with the company since at least 2006, mostly dealing in the international design department for the games outside of Japan.
Medalle was raised originally in Detroit, Michigan, and graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He eventually moved out to Seattle, Washington where he met his future wife Carrie. They eventually had two girls while living out in the Northwestern region.
Medalle leaves behind his two daughters and a wife, and the folks over on Reddit have already begun pooling together resources to help his two daughters get their college education paid for. A fundraiser was created over on YouCaring, explaining how the funds are being raised for the two daughters of the former Pokemon Company employee, and that the “...memorial fund will exist as a means for ongoing education and lifelong learning, a pathway that Eric helped to pave for his girls.”
So far Nintendo has not made any official announcements about Eric Medalla's death, but it just happened this Sunday and news has only begun to spread recently.
If you want to contribute to the fundraiser or learn more about it, you can do so by paying a visit to the YouCaring website. The college fundraiser for Eric Medalla's two daughters has raised more than $40,000 so far, and they have a set goal of $50,000... so they're very close to the goal.
