Sacred Citadel launches today on the Xbox Live Arcade, bringing gamers some classic beat-em-up action, wrapped in a shiny new setting within the Sacred RPG universe.

For those of us who fondly remember the days of crowding around a four-player arcade cabinet to take on games like X-Men or Gauntlet, Sacred Citadel should be a breath of fresh air (or old air, I suppose) now that it's available through Xbox Live.

Players can take on the role of an archer, mage, warrior, etc. and team up in a classic-style side-scrolling brawler, complete with unique weapons, massive spells, loads of enemies to pummel and vehicles/animals to ride around. And if you're already familiar with the Sacred universe, I'm sure you'll feel right at home in Citadel. Here's a bit of flavor text taken from the launch announcement.

“The once peaceful land of Ancaria is in grave danger,” it reades. “The evil Ashen empire has enslaved its population and is using the orc-like Grimmoc to wipe out the Seraphim, who swore to protect it.”

See, that's where you and your buddies come in. Your job is to beat the crap out of as many of these Grimmoc as humanly possible in order to rescue the Seraphim and, thus, save the day. It's pretty standard fantasy fare but, in a game that harkens back to the glory days of the arcade, I doubt we'd want it any other way.

You can grab a few friends and start questing starting today on Xbox Live Arcade. Sacred Citadel is going for 1200 MSP.
