Volition Software and Deep Silver announced a new game called Agents of Mayhem. They did so with a new trailer that has plenty of winks and hints at the Saints Row franchise, but the art-direction seems to borrow heavily from the likes of Battleborn and Overwatch.
IGN managed to nail the exclusive, giving gamers a firsthand look at the the four and a half minute debut trailer, which briefly covers some of the multiple agents that players will be able to control in the game, each with their own special abilities and skillsets.
Much like Saints Row, the upcoming Agents of Mayhem is an open-world game, only it's set in a futuristic version of South Korea's Seoul. The single-player title will see gamers commanding agents from the mercenary organization M.A.Y.H.E.M. They will do battle against a rival group known as L.E.G.I.O.N. As indicated in the debut trailer below, the M.A.Y.H.E.M., agents aren't entirely the good guys but they definitely get the job done.
There will be multiple agents to play, each offering players something different when it comes to play-style. They preview the Spanish pirate captain, Marina Santos, who goes by the codename “Fortune”. She has various drones at her disposal while dual-wielding two pistols.
The second playable character introduced is codenamed “Hardtack”, real name Ishmael Funderburke. He's a U.S. Navy specialist who has a patch over his eye and a harpoon as his weapon. The trailer hints at Hardtack being able to use the harpoon to cause environmental damage, but that could just be the cinematic. It would be cool if very similar to Realtime Worlds' Crackdown, gamers could use the environment as a weapon and physics-based attacks to take out foes.
Sadly we've been moving backwards in terms of actual playability in a lot of games, and physics-based attacks are now a rarity and not a standard.
The last character they introduce is Rod Stone, codenamed “Hollywood”. He's a reality TV star turned bounty hunter with a specialty in public relations. He has a smartphone and a generic “high tech” assault rifle at his disposal. The trailer also introduces probably the most inventive thing showcased: a shot of Rod's stunt double going in to take the spill for him. The YouTube comment section lit up when they saw the stunt double being called in to do the dangerous work. A lot of gamers assume it's going to be Rod's special ability – to call in an AI stunt double for a suicide bomb run.
So far Agents of Mayhem looks like a cross between Crackdown, Overwatch, Saints Row and Sunset Overdrive. A lot of the comments on the YouTube page are excitedly skeptical about the title and they seem to want to see more before getting too hyped. Thankfully, Volition will be showcasing the game at this year's E3, so we'll likely learn a lot more about the gameplay, the characters and the mechanics during the big trade show.
