Ubisoft has decided to make their gladiator combat game Spartacus Legends into a free-to-play game. Xbox Live Gold subscribers and all PSN users will be able to play it for no charge.

Spartacus Legends allows players to enter the arena as Spartacus, Crixus, or their own custom gladiator. They can choose from a wide selection of weapon, armor and skills. The game features head-to-head multiplayer offline and online. The latter is supported by global leaderbaords.

Players will be able to spend real-world money on equipment for their character. However, Ubisoft hopes to avoid a pay-to-win situation by introducing a fame system. Your character needs to earn fame (presumably by completing or winning matches) in order to use better equipment.

Legends is expected in Winter 2013.
