Tekken 7 is gearing up to put a beatdown on fighting fans across the world this year and, if the latest gameplay trailer can serve as an indicator, some classic characters may be getting new look. Yoshimitsu, for instance, features 100 percent more tentacles.

Yoshimitsu, who usually takes the form of some sort of a samurai or another, has been a staple of the Tekken series for a long time but, unlike most of the series’ characters, he frequently undergoes dramatic design changes. He’s always fought with a katana, but his look has ranged from classic warrior to a sort of bug creature with wings and the horns of a beetle.

In other words, it should come as no surprise to series fans that Yoshimitsu looks different yet again in upcoming fighter Tekken 7, but his look this time around is quite a dramatic departure. He still uses a katana and his face is covered by a protective shield that looks reminiscent to some of his previous getups, but the rest of the package is completely different. I guess the best way to describe the warriors new look is somewhere along the lines of “walking kraken.” His body looks like an armored alien’s while his head and arms are surrounded by waving tentacles.

The above trailer is the first time we’ve gotten a glimpse of Yoshimitsu from the upcoming Tekken fighter, though early looks at other characters appear to be par for the course. None of them, for instance, look like Cthulhu’s cousin.

Coming from Bandai Namco, Tekken 7 still doesn’t have a home console release date, though it’s been available in arcades for a couple of months now. The development team is promising a much “darker” story this time around, though no word on whether or not any of it will make a lick of sense. This is a fighting game we’re talking about, and they’re not traditionally known for their amazing narratives.

This actually promises to be a pretty big year or two for fighting fans, with lots of new iterations being made on classic formulas. We know that Street Fighter V is on the way, slated to launch exclusively on the PlayStation 4 and PC. The new Skullgirls game is inbound, as well as a 3DS Dragon Ball fighter boasting a roster of more than 100 characters.

If you like punching stuff, it’s a good time to be a gamer.
