22 Jump Street Red Band Trailer Delivers Sex, Cursing And An Incredibly Awkward Fistfight

Last month I attended the annual CinemaCon expo in Las Vegas, and during the Sony presentation I got to watch an exclusive new trailer for Phil Lord and Chris Miller's 22 Jump Street. I did my best to recap all of the best moments in the footage in the write-up I put together after the screening, but when it comes to comedy sometimes you just have to see it for yourself. Fortunately, the studio has released a brand new trailer for the upcoming sequel that features many of the best moments I saw in Vegas.
Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, 22 Jump Street picks up right after the events of the first movie and finds partners Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) stepping up their detective game and heading off to do an undercover mission at the local college (which is bizarrely called Metropolitan City State). The duo find themselves once again working a drug case - it worked so well last time, just do it again! (an awesome meta Hollywood joke)- but also must deal with the challenges that come with having a deep long-term relationship with each other. Ice Cube, Nick Offerman, Dave Franco, and Rob Riggle will reprise their roles from the first film, while new additions include Wyatt Russell, Jillian Bell, Jimmy Tatro, and Amber Stevens.
This isn't the exact cut I saw at CinemaCon (which was a tad bit longer as well), but it features some of my favorite scenes, especially the awkward fistfight between Schmidt and one of his female fellow college students. The scene is hilarious without any context, so I wonder if it will play even funnier when we get to know a bit more about Jillian Bell's character and her relationship with Schmidt.
If 22 Jump Street turns out to be as funny as the trailers make it out to be, then Phil Lord and Chris Miller will officially become the biggest directing stars of 2014. While the two filmmakers will spend their summer talking about the comedy blockbuster sequel they made, we won't soon forget that their were the brains behind the brilliant and hilarious The LEGO Movie:
