New App PercyFX Lets You Insert Personal Messages Into Your Favorite Movies

Have you ever had a burning desire to drop a personal message to a friend right into the middle of your favorite movie? Well, now there’s an app for that.

PercyFX is a free app available for download on most major devices that allows you to insert personal messages into different movies that are made available through the service. Most of the films used in the examples are from Universal Studios – from Scott Pilgrim vs. The World to Back to the Future: Part III -- which makes me wonder if PercyFX was created by the studio as a way to help promote their back catalog?

The official Web site for the app suggests ways that you can use the visual tool: Create a party invitation; propose to your significant other; send a reminder about an important event … really the possibilities are endless. Currently, the site says that PercyFX is available for Blackberry and Apple products, and is listed as “Coming Soon” for Android and the Windows Phone.

I’m not 100% sure, though, how inserting a message into a pre-existing film doesn’t violate the copyright rules that protect movies from being edited or changed by consumers. Maybe because this is a free service, and people aren’t making any money off of it, the studios aren’t concerned with people dropping personal messages into the middle of a movie? Now I want to know how Robert Zemeckis or Edgar Wright feel about having to share screen space with our silly notes to loved ones.
