Avatar 2 Likely To Leave Pandora

With Avatar on its way to a $75 million second weekend – which would make it the #2 biggest second weekend ever just behind The Dark Knight – it’s no wonder there’s sequel buzz. Actually, if the folks at Market Saw are right, this isn’t buzz at all; Avatar 2 is happening.

Two months ago we told you about another batch of MarketSaw rumors that Avatar 2 would go beyond Pandora. One of their ‘top sources’ said, “What would you think if I told you that should a sequel to AVATAR happen, it might not even take place on Pandora? It's all up the air as of now. But remember I'm telling you this. Pandora is not the be all and end all of the Consortium.” Now, they cite comments Cameron made to the LA Times as confirmation of their original report. Sure enough, Cameron says, “We have some story ideas for how to branch out into other moons of the Polyphemus and the Alpha Centauri A solar system.” After that Cameron jokes that Avatar will have to make some cash before planning a sequel.

Well, the movie made truckloads of money and will continue to do so, so that must mean another film is on the way. As always, I’ll remain skeptical until Cameron himself confirms a second film, but how could this not happen? Of course I wouldn’t want anything to spoil the first film, but in this case, it seems well worth the risk.
