John Hillcoat’s Lawless (previously known as The Wettest County) has a pretty spectacular cast. Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Guy Pearce, Shia LaBeouf … the film’s ensemble can hold its own with the best of them. And yet, the latest image from a new campaign makes us think that the real star of Hillcoat’s period crime thriller will be the guns.

MTV.com posted the first in what’s going to be a series of graphics analyzing, in great detail, the sidearms carried by the members of the Lawless cast. Why do they need guns? Well, in Hillcoat’s film the Bondurant brothers are bootleggers running booze through the Prohibition South. Oldman, from what we can tell, plays a criminal kingpin who’d like to either partner with the brothers or wipe them off the map completely … leaving their territory to his own empire. Pearce, on the flip side, plays a law enforcer committed to bringing the brothers to justice.

The above graphic breaks down the weapons of choice for key characters, from Hardy’s Colt Detective .38 Special (595 grams, with a muzzle velocity of 725 feet per second) to Pearce’s Smith & Wesson .38 Special. When a film pays this amount of attention to the firepower blasting across the screen, you know we’re in for something violently original.

Lawless is heading to theaters in limited release on Aug. 29. It screened earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival. If you haven’t seen the trailer for the film yet, we have it here. And keep your eyes out for more gun charts as we get closer to the film’s release.
