It seems almost a given for big budget action-adventures, but Summit Entertainment makes it official with a new please release: Divergent will hit theaters in IMAX next spring. IMAX Corporation will digitally re-master the finished film and give its audio a mix befitting of The IMAX Experience®, making the movie even more spectacular for those willing to pay a little extra. This will mark the third collaboration between Lionsgate, who oversees Summit, and IMAX Corporation on a hotly anticipated young adult book series adaptation.
Based on the first novel of Veronica Roth's best selling YA trilogy, Divergent is set in Chicago in the near future. The society of this time functions on a system that divides people into five groups based on their personalities: Dauntless for the brave, Candor for the honest, Abnegation for the selfless, Erudite for the smart, and Amity for the peaceful. At sixteen, the children of this world are given an aptitude test that will place them in one of these categories, so they can better train for their future. However, Beatrice "Tris" Prior's test results name her Divergent, an outsider brand that she is warned to keep positively secret. When she uncovers a conspiracy to annihilate all Divergents, Tris must find out why her group is considered a threat before it's too late.
Centering on a female teen protagonist, and offering a fantastic adventure where the stakes are life and death, Divergent shares some notable similarities to past Lionsgate/Summit adaptations, The Hunger Games and Twilight. Both of them got the glossy IMAX treatment, which surely boosted their impressive box office totals. It seems Summit understands that for fans of this book—as for fans of The Hunger Games and Twilight series—the release of this first installment of another promising franchise will be a cinematic event that can only be enhanced by proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology that allows for crystal-clear imagery on an awe-inspiringly massive screen. CEO of IMAX Entertainment and Senior Executive Vice President IMAX Corp Greg Foster assures their presentation of Divergent will give fans "the most immersive" viewing experience possible.
Divergent will open in the US on March 21, 2014. While that is a ways away, Summit has been teasing out the potential heavy hitter with a string of movie stills that show Shailene Woodley as Tris in action. Aside from the 21-year-old Golden Globe nominee for The Descendants, Divergent also boasts performances from Live Free or Die Hard's Maggie Q, A Good Day to Die Hard's Jai Courtney, Downton Abbey's Theo James, Project X's Miles Teller, G.I. Joe: Retaliation's Ray Stevenson, X-Men: First Class's Zoe Kravitz, as well as Mekhi Phifer, Ashely Judd and Kate Winslet. Neil Burger, who won acclaim helming the 2006 magician drama The Illusionist, directs from a screenplay by Evan Daugherty (Snow White and the Huntsman) and Vanessa Taylor (Game of Thrones).
