The Hunger Games franchise is chockablock with action packed moments. Now, we get to see a bit more of the amazing battles we can expect from the last film, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2. A new trailer features scenes from the climactic combat at the capitol.
Oh, man. This trailer, which comes to us via YouTube, is heavy on explosive action and drama. The spot starts with a large nod to the previous films, and then dives into some of what we can expect from the final film in the insanely popular series. There are plenty of OMG moments well interspersed with flashes of quieter, more deeply emotional, character driven scenes. It’s all shaping up to be an exciting end for these movies.
In case you’ve been too wrapped up in Star Wars fever to remember, The Hunger Games films are based on the young adult books of the same name by Suzanne Collins. The story was told in a trilogy, but, as has become popular with book series turned into movies, the last novel has been split into two parts for the final chapter of the story.
This sequel follows Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) as she and her friends head for the capitol to assassinate President Snow (Donald Sutherland) in order to liberate Panem from the clutches of his leadership and The Hunger Games. Snow has set many dangerous traps for the team of rebels that will include battles with fierce enemies and lead to many decisions about how to fight the ultimate battle for freedom.
The dystopian adventure series follows the heroine as she takes her sister’s place in The Hunger Games, a competition where kids are forced into isolation and have to kill all the other competitors in order to win the televised struggle. Katniss does win, and also becomes a symbol of the resistance against the capitol, which holds these games as punishment for the rest of the nation.
The previous three films have made the series the twentieth highest grossing franchise in history, with ticket sales over $2 billion for those combined movies. The first two films, The Hunger Games and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, got scores of over eighty percent from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, while the third movie, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 scored only sixty-five percent. That’s a pretty good dip in critical reception, but when another film is planned in a series and its predecessor makes a ton of dough, that’s all it takes for the series to keep going as long as possible.
Jennifer Lawrence is a huge part of the success of these movies. The young star was already on her way to superstardom when cast in the role. She’d already scored an Oscar nomination for her turn as a determined teen in the stark drama Winter’s Bone in 2011. She’s followed that success with her action heroine turns as Katniss Everdeen and Raven/Mystique in the rebooted X-Men series. She’s also gone on to be nominated for an impressive list of awards, and win an Academy Award in 2013 for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook.
It’s impossible to think that this film won’t make a gabillion dollars. And, whether critics end up liking it or not, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 will certainly leave people happy with all the fighting, running, shooting and exploding that’s sure to await them in this movie.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 opens on November 20.
