Corporate takeovers are always fun aren’t they? Well in this case it’s all for the better. MGM pictures has been in a rut for a while now and has been looking for potential buyers. The folks over at Sony Pictures (the Parent company of Columbia/Tri-Star & Screen Gems) though have failed to construct a final offer for the studio. Instead who swoops in for the rescue? AOL Time Warner. It appears now that the conglomerate is likely to actually go ahead with the purchase.
Now, why is this so important? Why is this a good thing? New Line Cinema has been trying to acquire the movie rights for J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit for some time now. Problem is they’ve been trying to get them from the source, Tolkien’s bastard relatives. Though, a studio already has the rights to the book. What studio has the rights? MGM. Who owns New Line Cinema? AOL Time Warner.
If this deal is done, no doubt will we see a worthy prequel to the phenomenal, Academy Award Winning, Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Peter Jackson has continued to show interest in doing it, but the only hold up has been the rights issue. Sony’s botch has created a show business loophole that will make us all cream in our pants once those Weta hard drives start warming up and giving us some more Middle-Earth wonderment.
Sony’s hat is still in the picture, but AOL Time Warner has the upper hand. As much as those Time Warner bastards are monopolistic scumbags, ya gotta hand it to them, they are some smooth ass bitches. It’s up to the MGM management now as to who’ll get the sale, so start saying your prayers and crossing your fingers folks. We need all the luck on our side. Go Time Warner!
