Some of the greatest films of all time are part of the gangster genre. With titles like Francis Ford Coppola's Godfather movies, Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas, and Raoul Walsh's White Heat, the history of cops versus crooks in Hollywood is an immensely important one. And the cast and crew of the upcoming film Gangster Squad hopes that one day the entry in the genre will be listed among the greats.

With the period crime drama due out in early next year, Warner Bros. has produced a brand new featurette that takes us behind-the-scenes of the new Ruben Fleischer directed movie, with the all-star cast commenting on what it was like to make it (and also providing some brand new footage). You can watch the video below or in HD over at Apple.

Set in Los Angeles back during the 1940s and 1950s, Gangster Squad is based on the true story of how detectives within the Los Angeles Police Department bent the law to try and keep the East Coast mafia and the likes of ruthless kingpin Mickey Cohen off of their city's streets. Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and Sean Penn (as Cohen) star, and the outstanding supporting cast includes Nick Nolte, Robert Patrick, Michael Peña, Frank Grillo, Giovanni Ribisi, and Anthony Mackie. After being delayed a few months, the film is finally set to arrive in theaters on January 11, 2013.
