Curtis Hanson has been absent from the big screen for quite a while now. After working through the aughts, making three films in six years, the filmmaker decided to take a break from Hollywood. While he did directed the made-for-TV movie Too Big To Fail in 2011, he hasn't had a movie in cinema's since 2007's Lucky You (which for some reason I only remember as "That filmed that opened on the same day as Spider-Man 3." Don't ask me why). Finally, however, he's making his way back and is set to premiere his surfing coming-of-age drama Chasing Mavericks in a few months. And today we have the first trailer.

The movie, based on a true story, stars Jonny Weston as Jay Moriarity, a young man who dreams of surfing on some of the biggest waves in the world. In order to do so, he puts himself under the tutelage of Frosty Hesson (Gerard Butler), and finds himself risking life and limb to become one of the world's great surfers. The first preview comes courtesy of MTV and you can watch it below.

Chasing Mavericks, due out on October 26th, also stars Abigail Spencer, and Elisabeth Shue. Brandon Hooper and Kario Salem wrote the script and the film will be distributed by 20th Century Fox. For more about the movie, head over to our Blend Film Database.
